Online Forum to learn the rules of Field Lacrosse
Hello JDF Families,
Please see the message below from Vancouver Island Field Lacrosse League Head Official Wes Tyre about an upcoming online forum where you can ask questions about the rules of Field Lacrosse.
The session will take place on October 4th at 7:00pm. The Zoom link can be found at the bottom of this message.
Thank you.

Coaches, Parents and players often misunderstand and misinterpret the rules of the game, it is difficult to explain these rules and the subsequent calls in real time while games are in progress. This is particularly true at the younger ages. In particular, U9, U11 and U13 where the officials are often younger and less experienced, the coaches are often “voluntold” parents or ex-box players and the parents can find it a challenge understanding a new and often complex rule set.
We would like to help alleviate some of these concerns and potential issues by giving you a forum to voice you concerns and ask questions, perhaps receive some educational guidance to the game. We feel that a moderated forum every couple of weeks during the season might give coaches, managers, parents and players a chance to be heard and ask questions.
Format:
- attended by VIFLL OIC and Head Coach
- attended by Chair and/or Vice-Chair VIFLL
- written submissions - questions regarding rules and their interpretations
- questions from coaches in attendance
- questions from parents in attendance
- questions from Players in attendance
Specific calls from games will not be discussed, but rather interpretation and application of specific rules.
Example - "Raiders Jonny was slashed in the arm by JDF Jimmy at the U11 game on Sunday and there was no call." will instead be a discussion around the slashing rule and its application during game play.
Personal attacks will be cut off by the moderator and will not be tolerated.
Example - "Wes refereed our game and he is terrible, blind, slow and a big homer" while this may be true we will not allow the personal attack to continue, but try to direct the conversation to officiating consistency, and variety of officials for specific competitors and games. We will, of course, try to ensure the best refereeing possible for Jonny and Jimmy.
This will be a moderated discussion to avoid it becoming a “b@$ch session”. We would like to give everyone an opportunity to ask questions and better understand the rules of the game and their application on the field.
We look forward to quality questions and discussion.
Regards,
Wes Tyre
